John McCain, an American war hero and United States senator from Arizona, has passed away at age 81 on Saturday, Aug. 25. The senator, who has been serving in Congress since January 3, 1987 after succeeding Barry Goldwater, had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer for more than a year.
After a decision to end his treatment, McCain focused on spending time with his family before he was gone.

McCain died on Saturday, Aug. 25 with his family by his said. The family announced the news in a statement which read: “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018. With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”
In the summer of 2017, Senator John McCain revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. On Friday, Aug. 24, his family revealed to the world that McCain would decide to discontinue his medical treatment.
“Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious,” the family said in a statement. “In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment. Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. God bless and thank you all.”

Born on Aug. 29, 1936m John Sidney McCain III would go on to be a decorated politician and military veteran. Having attended the Naval Academy, McCain served from 1958-1981 where he was a Captain during the Vietnam War. McCain was almost killed during the war when his plane was shot down and he was captured. McCain was a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese from 1967-1973. McCain earned a Silver Star Medal, three Bronze Star Medals with Combat “V,” a Purple Heart Medal, two Legion of Merit medals with Combat “V,” the Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Commendation Medals, among others.
After serving in the war, McCain turned his eyes to politics. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona’s 1st district and the United States Senate. He was also a member of the Senate Armed Service Committee, Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Senator Commerce Committee.
