The 2018 college football season is just around the corner and the most important rankings have been released. On Monday, Aug. 20, the Associated Press unveiled its AP Top 25 preseason poll for the upcoming campaign. In the Coaches Poll and FWAA-NFF Super 16 rankings, reigning national champion Alabama was the clear top-ranked team. That was expected to be the same when the Associated Press poll was unveiled.
As expected, the Crimson Tide did top the list with 42 first-place votes.
Rounding out the top five were the Clemson Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Wisconsin Badgers, and Ohio State Buckeyes. Clemson received 18 first-place votes, while Wisconsin received one.
Earlier this month, the Amway Coaches Poll dropped with the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide sitting at No. 1, but that poll bears no influence in the College Football Playoff rankings. That’s why the release of the AP Top 25 poll is the most important of the preseason, with our first look at how things could play out throughout the year.
