The school year is coming to an end, the skies are blue and summer’s in the air: cue adventure. Whether you’re a fan of the heat or prefer to spend your time lounging in the shade, there’s something for everybody when the hotter months come around. The world is your oyster and you’ve free time aplenty – but what to do with it? Here are five ways for you to make the most of your holidays.
Internships for the Future
Just because finals are done and dusted, it doesn’t mean your education has to be. Internships are certainly one of the more productive ways to spend your summer, be they paid or unpaid. It can be competitive to find one specific to your interests, sure. It can be dull. But a big name and a stint of industry experience on your resume can mean a whole lot when it does come to that eventual job hunt. Talk to your professors. Talk to your friends and family, see if there’s anything going on in the lab or family business. Failing that, there’s always Google.
Put Your Feet Up, Play Your Hand

Enough with this productivity business. You’ve been working hard all throughout the academic year and it’s well past time you’ve earned yourself a break, right? Right! So go on then, put your feet up. Get the friends around. Enjoy the weather. You could even whip out the ol’ deck of cards.
A game of neighborhood poker might just be the perfect way to reunite the old high school crowd while you’re at home. As time’s gone on gaming has gotten bigger and better, and while you’ve been studying the pros have been crafting – themed slots for summer, virtual tables, online and on your phone. It’s never been easier to play your way to some proper holiday chill, alone or in a group.
On the Water
Grab your kayaks folks, we’re off for a dip. Nothing says summer like a splash around, be it in a lake, an ocean or the local stream. Sun cream on, surfboards at the ready. Even if you’re not one much for hurling yourself off the edge or diving deep down to the coral, a simple paddle in the pool can be beneficial. It keeps you cool, it keeps you socializing and reminds you that your next set of exams are still very far away – for now!
A BBQ Feast
Need we say more? Slap a patty on the grill, put the game on TV and life that good life. Vegetarian and vegan options are pretty much everywhere these days so no one has to get left out. Catch up with your friends over a sizzler, celebrate the 4th of July or just kick it on a gentle evening with the family dog.
Better yet, spend some time with your parents. They’ve missed you, and burning burgers is the perfect way to change the subject when they start to talk about grades.
A Road Trip Under the Stars

A college student summer wouldn’t be complete with a road trip some place or another. In fact, it’s almost a necessity. If you’re wanting to attend an internship, if you’re wanting to swim, bet, eat and explore the world at all you’re going to have to at least spend some time in a car. So host what you can and attend the rest – your classmates are spread out all over the country, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait till the new year.
Wherever you’re spending your summer, spend it well, spend it safely and make the most of it. Good luck!
