At long last, the quarterfinals in Wimbledon are upon us. In the late match on Wednesday, there is a match between two top-five opponents. This match will be between the number two ranked Rafael Nadal and the number five ranked Juan Martin del Potro. Both of these players have faced each other 15 times in the past with Nadal winning nine of those matches. With such a close head-to-head record, one should assume that this quarterfinals match will be extremely competitive.
apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, ‘Helvetica Neue’, sans-serif;”>Rafael Nadal entered Wimbledon in tremendous form. After winning the French Open earlier this year, he has looked fully healthy for the first time in years. Nadal’s court coverage and topspin have helped him dominate opponents thus far in the tournament. In four matches, Nadal has yet to drop a set and looks poised to win his second Wimbledon title. However, del Potro is a formidable opponent who has the ability of upsetting the world number two. If Nadal expects to avoid this upset, he will need to use his speed on the court to elongate some rallies on Wednesday.
Juan Martin del Potro has also looked extremely well on his way to the quarterfinals. In four matches, he has only lost one set as his big serves and powerful forehands have simply overpowered all of his opponents. However, Nadal is a different animal. Nadal is capable of returning his powerful shots regularly unlike his previous opponents. If del Potro hopes to win this match, he will need to shorten the points by using his powerful weapons to keep Nadal way behind the baseline. If del Potro is able to hit his spots regularly with his strokes, it will be a long day for Nadal.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Nadal. Nadal simply looks like the best player in the world at the moment with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. He has played del Potro many times in his career and should adjust to his tendencies relatively quickly. Nadal also has had extra time to prepare for this match since del Potro had to finish his match yesterday against Gilles Simon. Although I think that del Potro will win at least a set, I simply cannot see him taking this match from Nadal.
