At long last, the quarterfinals in Wimbledon are upon us. In the early match on Wednesday, there is a match between two top-ten opponents. This match will be between the number one ranked Roger Federer and the number eight ranked Kevin Anderson. Both of these players have faced each other four times in the past with Federer winning each of these matches. However, with a spot in the semifinals at stake, expect this match to be more competitive than people think.
apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, ‘Helvetica Neue’, sans-serif;”>Kevin Anderson entered the season with high hopes. After dealing with several injuries a few years ago, Anderson is now fully healthy again and was able to rejoin the top ten rankings as a result. Anderson has one of the best serves on tour which makes him almost impossible to beat on grass. Standing at 6’6, Anderson is able to serve with extreme power and precision which essentially makes him impossible to break. Although he has never beaten Federer before, he has never faced Federer on this surface. Expect Anderson to rely heavily on his serve if he hopes to move into the semifinals.
Roger Federer needs no real introduction. To put it gently, he is the greatest tennis player to ever live. At the age of 36, Federer is still the best player in the world and is hungry for his record ninth Wimbledon title. So far this tournament, Federer has looked unstoppable and has not dropped a set yet as a result. However, he has not faced a server like Anderson in this year’s tournament yet. Federer is an elite returner who should win this match. However, if it continuously goes to tiebreakers every set due to Anderson’s serve, an upset is definitely possible.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Federer. How can one go against the greatest of all-time? Although I think that Anderson will hold his serve frequently in this match, I cannot see him breaking Federer due to his questionable returning skills. Anderson might be able to squeak out a set in a tiebreak but he will not beat Federer in a five set match on grass.
