At long last, the quarterfinals is upon us in the World Cup. In the second quarterfinals match, Belgium will battle Brazil for a spot in the semifinals. Both teams were able to win their respective groups and then managed to secure victories in the round of 16. Now, star forwards Romelu Lukaku and Neymar will battle it out as both players will look to carry their teams this Friday.
Belgium’s success is due to its star forwards Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. Belgium’s attack was crucial in its insane comeback against Japan last round. Belgium managed to be down two goals in the second half but did not panic as the team rallied to win a thrilling 3-2 game. Now, Belgium will need to play with that same level of intensity for an entire match instead of just the second half since Brazil is a significantly better team than Japan.
apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, ‘Helvetica Neue’, sans-serif;”>Brazil entered the tournament as the favorite to lift the trophy and the team has looked quite solid throughout the tournament thus far. After initially struggling in the group stage, Brazil has won each of its last three matches by a score of 2-0. Brazil easily disposed of Mexico in the round of 16 match thanks to some brilliant defensive play from the midfielders and defensive backs. Brazil’s defense will need to keep its current form against a much stronger offensive threat this Friday if the team hopes to advance to the semifinals.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Belgium. I personally think that Brazil is the more skilled team but Belgium has dealt with high-pressure situations recently unlike Brazil. Belgium simply should not have beaten Japan last round which makes them that much more dangerous moving forward. Belgium is a world class team that has been given a second life. Expect Belgium to make the most of it.
