Jarrod Ramos, 38, is the man accused of walking into the Capital Gazette building on Thursday, June 28, and opening fire on the newspaper staff with a shotgun. Ramos’ ruthless attack resulted in the death of five employees; assistant editor and columnist Rob Hiaasen, special publications editor Wendi Winters, writer John McNamara, editorial page editor Gerald Fischman and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.
On Friday, June 29, the gunman is due in court where he faces five counts of first-degree murder in connection to the rampage, according to law enforcement officials.
Ramos is scheduled for a bail hearing 10:30 a.m. Friday in Annapolis.
Ramos, who was armed with a shotgun and smoke grenades, reportedly fired through the door of the newsroom before looking for victims and gunning them down. The 38-year-old had a long-standing feud with the paper, including a lawsuit for defamation that was ultimately thrown out.

Ramos was identified as the suspected shooter in the incident which reportedly left at least five people dead and several more “gravely injured” in Annapolis, Maryland. NBC News and CBS News were among the first to confirm his identity. Police responded to an active shooter situation at the Capital Gazette News building. The incident took place outside of the Capital Gazette newsroom. According to FOX 46, “Anne Arundel County police said the shots fired report came in at about 2:35 p.m. in the 800 block of Bestgate Road near the Westfield Annapolis Mall.”
