The Capital Gazette was less than 24 hours removed from the most deadly attack on the press in more than a decade when a lone gunman stormed into their newsroom and shot five of the paper’s employee’s dead with a shotgun. On Friday, June 29, The Capital continued to do their job but with a special tribute to the fallen five victims.
Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, and Wendi Winters had their headshots featured above the fold on the front page of the paper with the headline “5 shot dead at The Capital.”

The victims were also honored on the opinion page, which featured a simple message:
“Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank today to commemorate victims of Thursday’s shootings at our office,” the page read before listing the names of the victims. “Tomorrow this page will return to its steady purpose of offering our readers informed opinion about the world around them, that they might be better citizens.”

Jarrod Ramos, 38, has been identified as the suspected shooter in the incident which reportedly left at least five people dead and several more “gravely injured” in Annapolis, Maryland. NBC News and CBS News were among the first to confirm his identity. On Thursday, June 25, police responded to an active shooter situation at the Capital Gazette News building. The incident took place outside of the Capital Gazette newsroom. According to FOX 46, “Anne Arundel County police said the shots fired report came in at about 2:35 p.m. in the 800 block of Bestgate Road near the Westfield Annapolis Mall.”
The Capital Gazette had received threats on social media earlier in the day, according to law enforcement officials. Shortly after police responded to the active shooter situation, reports surfaced that Ramos was apprehended and taken into custody.
