Early Life & Education

Donovan was born on March 4, 1982, in Ontario, California, and was raised in Redlands, California. Donovan attended Redlands East Valley High School.
Donovan began playing soccer when he was six-years-old and in 1997, he was accepted into U.S. Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program.


Professional Career

Donovan signed his first professional contract in 1999 for German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. In 2001, Donovan was loaned to the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS. He had an immediate impact in the MLS and led the Earthquakes to MLS titles in 2001 and 2003.
In January 2005,  Donovan returned to the Bayer Leverkusen first team in Germany. Later in 2005, Donovan signed a multi-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy that made him the highest-paid American player in the league at the time.
Donovan would be with the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2005 to 2014,  winning the MLS championship five-times. During his career with the Galaxy, Donovan spent time in the offseason on loan with clubs such as Everton and even Bayern Munich in 2009.
Donovan played for the United States of America at the 2002, 2006, and 2010 World Cups. In 2014, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann elected to leave Donovan off the roster.
Donovan retired from the Galaxy in 2016 but then resumed his career in Liga MX with Club Leon in 2018.
