Duque was born in Bogotá. Through his education, he earned a law degree and a major in philosophy and humanities from Sergio Arboleda University. In 1999, Duque started his professional career as a consultant in the Andean Development Corporation; he later served as an advisor at the Colombian Ministry an advisor at the Colombian Ministry of Finance and Public Credit until around 2002. Towards the end of 2017, he was appointed by his party as its candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Colombia. The following year, he won the primary with over 4 million votes.
