In 1999, Duque started his professional career as a consultant in the Andean Development Corporation; he later served as an advisor at the Colombian Ministry an advisor at the Colombian Ministry of Finance and Public Credit until around 2002. During this time, he also worked for the Inter-American Development Bank, staying in the position until around 2013; Duque had different positions for the bank, including Senior Adviser to the Executive Board for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, Advisor to the Presidency, and chief of the Division of Culture, Solidarity, and Creativity. During the early 2010’s, he also worked for the United Nations.

By 2014, Duque returned to Colombia, becoming a candidate for the Senate in the legislative election. During his time as a senator, he authored various laws, including those to increase maternity leave and to increase the availability of defibrillators in public facilities. Towards the end of 2017, he was appointed by his party as its candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Colombia. The following year, he won the primary with over 4 million votes. By June, he was elected the nation’s president.
