A Look At The 2018 Royal Ascot Meeting

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to grab your finest attire: the 2018 Royal Ascot meeting is almost here. Ascot Racecourse is renowned for its picturesque setting and it will host five days of exhilarating flat racing action, starting on Tuesday, June 19th and culminating on Saturday 23rd. As with most major racing events, punters will be eagerly anticipating one of the standout meetings on the calendar.

The 2017 Royal Ascot meeting was a roaring success and flat racing fans traveled from all over the world to pay homage to the best trainers, owners, jockeys and above all, horses in the industry. According to a local news outlet, around 300,000 spectators attended Ascot in 2017 – slightly down on the previous year but still a very high number of people considering it takes place during the week.

Looking ahead to this summer’s event, it should be another huge week of action on the flat. Racing enthusiasts were disappointed to hear the news that highly gifted mare Winx will not be traveling over from Australia; Black Caviar attracted plenty of attention when winning at Royal Ascot in 2012. But there are still lots of talented horses in the mix – we look at the highlight race from each day of the meeting…

TUESDAY: Queen Anne Stakes

At 4/1, RHODODENDRON may be the bet of the week. Over at Timeform, there will be lots of punters tipping the Aidan O’Brien mare to go on and win this race – she was excellent when winning the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury earlier this month.

A win for bettors in this Group One race gets the week off to a flyer and it is always one of the most popular races of Royal Ascot. The race was first run way back in 1840 and it could turn out to be one of the highlights of this year’s meeting.

WEDNESDAY: Prince of Wales’ Stakes

Look no further than CRACKSMAN in this race. Currently valued at just under even money, he is the class horse in the field and will take some stopping. Horses aged four and over are able to compete in Wednesday’s big race and this is another big one for the punters; it was one of the most popular races in 2017.

POET’S WORD is another prominent contender for the Prince of Wales’ Stakes. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he finished second in the Dubai Classic at Meyden back in March and cannot be discounted if aimed at this particular event.

THURSDAY: Ascot Gold Cup

Slated to take place on Ladies Day, the Ascot Gold Cup has lots of glitz and glamour – there will be plenty of flair on a show; both on and off the racecourse. Without a doubt, it is the showpiece race of the week and punters will be looking at the latest ante-post betting odds ahead of this year’s meeting.

2016 champion ORDER OF ST GEORGE heads the early betting odds but STRADIVARIUS may be vying for favoritism on Gold Cup day. A comfortable winner of the Yorkshire Cup on May 18th, he may be the one to beat.

FRIDAY: Commonwealth Cup

A much tougher race to predict, this usually has a big field and it may prove prudent to look further down the betting. Favorites rarely emerge victorious in this one and that bodes ill for SIOUX NATION. The likes of U.S NAVY FLAG and INVINCIBLE ARMY could fall short as well…

An interesting fact: the Commonwealth Cup is the only Group One race in Great Britain that is exclusively for three-year-olds that also allows geldings to compete. CARAVAGGIO was the winner of this race 12 months ago and another O’Brien-trained star could be worth backing.

SATURDAY: Diamond Jubilee Stakes

Fan favorite HARRY ANGEL will go off as the favorite for this race if he heads to Royal Ascot – and it would take a brave man to back against this horse on recent efforts. 5/2 is some price considering his talent and many tipsters will be selecting him as their NAP of the week.

There are no real trends relating to jockeys or trainers in this race; that makes for an exciting contest. Frankie Dettori’s mount will receive plenty of attention in the betting ring ahead of the festival and it is hard to look past the current ante-post favorite.
