Beloved comic series Y the Last Man is finally getting its long-anticipated television adaption on FX after nearly three years of development. FX announced the order for a pilot on 4/5/2018, with showrunners Aida Mashaka (Luke Cage) and Michael Green (American Gods, Logan) and Melina Matsoukas (Master of None, Insecure) directing the first episode.
Y the Last Man, written by Brian K. Vaughn (Runaways, Saga) is one of the most critically acclaimed comics of the last two decades. Launched by DC/Vertigo in 2002, the series follows the adventures of Yorick Brown or ‘Y’, the only male survivor of a plague that targeted all other possessors of the Y chromosomes. The 60-issue series is known for its exploration of race and gender identity and has won not only three Eisner Awards but the first-ever Hugo for a graphic novel.
Y The Last Man has a long history of unsuccessful attempts to adapt it. An initial film adaption was planned by New Lone Cinema with director D.J. Caruso tapped for the project in 2007 and Dan Trachtenberg in 2013, and actors such as Shia LaBeouf and Zachary Levi put forwards for the role of Yorick. After New Line’s plans consistently fell through the rights were picked up by FX in 2015, and attached Green to the project in 2016.
While neither casting or a premiere date has been announced, with such illustrious showrunners and the wild success of FX’s other comic adaption, Legion, fans can be confident that the show will do them and the beloved series justice.
