Police are investigating U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma after a former student was found on campus with a gun in his backpack on Thursday morning. According to officials, police arrived and confiscated the gun, but the student left the scene. At this time, it is unknown why the former student was at the school. The school was then placed on a lockdown as police searched for the student, which then transitioned into a “lockout.”
Officials have confirmed that nobody will be allowed to enter the building, although classes will resume as usual inside the building.
Parents are not allowed in the school, although they will be allowed to pick up their children at the school’s west entrance and check in with the police officer there. All after-school activities at the school have also been canceled.
Lockouts were also put in place at various local schools, which have since been lifted: Van Buren, Coolidge, Fillmore, Rancho Village, Stand Watie and Emerson South.
At this time, there are believed to be no injuries related to the incident.
What are officials saying?
Oklahoma Public Schools released the following statement on their official Twitter account:
“US Grant is currently on lockdown in safe areas after a gun was found on campus. Police onsite. No injuries. Students will remain on lockdown until police deem the facility safe. Nearby elementary schools on lockout as a precaution. More info as available.”
“US Grant is moving from a lockdown to a lockout. Parents are not allowed in the school, but are allowed to come pick up their student. Parents should go to the west entrance and check in with the police officer there.”
“All after school activities have been cancelled for US Grant High School.”
As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.
