Highline College On Lockdown After Reports Of Gunshots On Campus

Police are responding to reports gunfire at the Highline College campus in Des Moines, Washington, school officials say. The school has been placed on lockdown. Multiple agencies are responding to the still unconfirmed reports.
KOMO news reported from the scene that students were running saying there was an “active shooter” on campus.


UPDATE (1:15 p.m. EST): 

Puget Sound Fire Officials and the ATF say that there is no evidence of any shooter or gunshot victims found at Highline Colleg in Washington state. While the school gunfire report is now considered to be a false alarm, the school is remaining on lockdown as a precaution.


The school posted a Facebook update alerting students and staff of the lockdown around 9 a.m. PST.

“We have reports of gunfire on campus. Please lock down all offices and classrooms until further notice,” the status update reads.

The community college then posted a second status update that read:

“Remain in lockdown – This is not a drill
All Buildings need to remain in lockdown. Barricade doors and windows. Police are responding and we will have further details shortly.”

Police are currently on the scene investigating and searching university buildings. There is no word on any injuries, fatalities, or suspects at this time. The school has approximately 15,000 – 20,000 enrolled students.

What Happened?

Highline College in Des Moines, Washington posted a status update on their Facebook alerting students and staff that a lockdown was in place due to reports of gunfire on campus. The lockdown comes just two days after 17-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The nearby Renton Police department tweeted that they and multiple agencies are assisting at Highline. They also tweeted that “families that want information or need a location to go to regarding Highline Incident (still unconfirmed) are being directed to Lowes NW corner parking lot at this time.”


The Kent Police Department tweeted that there is a “large police presence around school and along Pacific Hwy. S.” amd asked civilians to avoid the area:
