2018 is coming in with a bang: ‘bomb cyclones’ made of strong winds and deep snow have hit the northeastern United States. Emergencies and blizzard warnings have been put into effect in various states along the East Coast: Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Virginia. The amount of snow hitting the country varies by state and even by city.
How much snowfall is every the East Coast getting?
- New Jersey, especially the coastal Atlantic City, could reach up to 18 inches of snow.
- Deleware is expected to get around a foot of snow.
- In Massachusetts, Boston is expected to receive 10 to 19 inches of snow, with the storm calming down by evening.
- More than a foot is expected for Rhode Island.
- In Maryland, around 10 inches have hit Baltimore, with a similar amount of snowfall in the state’s coastal area.
- In New York, Queens and the and neighboring Nassau County could get up to 10 inches; New York City is only forecast to receive five to eight inches of snowfall.
What else is happening because of the snow?
- Schools have been closing along the East Coast, in cities like Baltimore; Boston, Newark, New York, Philadelphia, Providence, Virginia Beach, and Washington.
- Nearly 3,000 flights have been canceled by early Thursday morning along the East Coast.
- Power outages have occurred in Virgina, with more expected to come, according to The New York Times.
