Legendary Dominican MLB player Sammy Sosa isn’t at all recognizable from his time on the baseball diamond. Now, the retired star athlete looks like a white guy (seriously, check out the gallery). The 48-year-old MLB icon says that his new Caucasian appearance has to do with a bleaching cream that transformed his natural brown skin to that of an ordinary white dude.
Sammy Sosa looks so white that the “dab” he’s doing in the gallery may be considered cultural appropriation at this point.
Sosa began bleaching his skin back in 2009, and consistent use of the product fully transformed his outward appearance (a radical change of skin tone). In an interview with Univision’s Primer Impacto show, he claimed that he bleached his skin out of choice and not out of self-hatred for his skin color.
“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin tone. It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily. What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson.”
To be honest, Michael Jackson’s transition wasn’t as smooth as Sosa’s. Seriously, I wouldn’t be able to tell that he was at one time a visible black man. At this moment, he can still pass off as a light-skinned Latino with European heritage or maybe a mixed Arab. But a black man? Not anymore. He’s a white dude now. I wonder if this would be considered “trans-racial.”
This sudden change in appearance has caused some concern on Twitter, some wanting answers, while another user was simply wondering about the man’s mental health…
Is Sammy Sosa okay? Can someone go check on him??? Please??????

Sammy’s decision is Sammy’s decision. But some people still can’t wrap their mind around this fully bleached MLB legend…

Does Sosa have a case of colorism? That’s a term that isn’t thrown around too often…
Seriously, at this point, cultural appropriation? Just asking for a friend…
I still can't believe this is Sammy Sosa pic.twitter.com/FJS1uF8l9V

What could cause someone to permanently change their skin color? A longing desire for the supposed ever-lasting benefits of “white privilege”? Did he feel like a white person trapped inside a brown body, in the vein of a transracial, which isn’t recognized as a legit identity categorization by the mainstream public…yet. Or maybe he didn’t expect to turn out like Mr. Rodgers and just decided to roll with it in the end.
Is the world really ready for a white Sammy Sosa? Sure…why not?
Now, he looks like the all grown up version of Eddie Munster
