Rafael Nadal takes on Juan Martin Del Potro once again in the 2017 semi-finals for the U.S. Open. Del Potro has struggled with wrist injuries throughout the years, but he’s not going to let that stop him on his way to the finals. Yesterday, Del Potro defeated Roger Federer, with a score of 6-4. Tonight, Potro is looking to repeat history by defeating Nadal like he did in 2009 on his way to win the U.S. Open.
Nadal has fallen to Del Potro during their last two games. Therefore, the 31-year-old Spaniard isn’t taking his opponent lightly (despite any lingering wrist issues). Nadal admits that “Juan Martin is a top player. When he’s playing well, it’s difficult to stop him.”
“I have to play my best tennis,” Nadal said. “If you let him play from good positions with his forehand, you are dead, because he plays super-aggressive, hitting so hard.”
On the other hand, Del Potro claims to not be in “good condition.” He had to endure four wrist surgeries in the past. I wonder if that will come into play tonight.
“Personally, I like to play against him when I’m in good condition. But it’s not the case at this moment,” said Del Potro. “He’s also a lefty, so he has chance to find easily my backhand.”
Rafael Nadal is a 2010 and 2013 U.S. Open Champion, while Juan Martin Del Porto won the competition back in 2009. Wrist injuries have put a damper on Del Porto’s career. And Nadal maintain an 8-5 career edge over his opponent.
