With Hurricane Irma hanging over the horizon, will the Miami Dolphins still battle the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday? As of this moment, the game hasn’t been cancelled. But the Dolphins and Buccaneers won’t be playing in Miami as previously planned. At first, the game was set to take place inside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, but since Hurricane Irma is expected to hit South Florida by Sunday, this venue will be closed down in time for the scheduled game.
Here’s an official statement from the NFL regarding Hurricane Irma impacting the game between the Bucs and the Dolphins…
Due to the potential impact of Hurricane Irma on South Florida, the Miami Dolphins home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium, will not be played in Miami on Sunday, the NFL announced today.
In the interest of public safety in light of the current state of emergency, the NFL, in consultation with state and local officials as well as both clubs, has decided that playing an NFL game in South Florida this week is not appropriate.
The league will continue to examine other options, including playing the game this Sunday at a neutral site or in Miami later this season, and will provide an update on that decision as soon as possible.
It appears as if the Dolphins and the Bucs will have to find an alternative venue to play their Week 1 game. But if the two teams can find an area in time then this game between Tampa Bay and Miami will likely be postponed. The game could always be made up on November 19, when both the Bucs and the Dolphins share the same bye week
Dolphins Quarterback Jay Cutler said on Tuesday that it’d be tough on the Dolphins to play on November 19, since it would mean that the team would play 16 straight games without a week off. Cutler said, “It’d be tough. But we’d make it through it. Guys kind of need that buy week to make it through the 2nd half of the season.”
