“Division and school staff are in constant communication with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and are following established safety procedures at the schools. While access to and from the schools is restricted as part of these safety measures, instruction and activities are ongoing inside the schools.”
The Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center has also been placed on lockdown, with security checking ID’s at the entrances. Despite this, civilians are still able to go in for appointments.
Ivey says people inside businesses or homes near the shop should shelter in place. People are being asked to avoid the area.
Ivey said they are asking the community to refrain from using social media to talk about the incident. They want to make sure deputies and the suspect are safe. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center was initially placed on lockdown, due to a recommendation by police.
The hospital is now operating on controlled access. Sentara officials say security is checking the IDs of outpatients who have scheduled procedures. Visitors are being asked to stay home until the incident is resolved.
Police are asking everyone nearby to avoid the area. Similarly, the area around Second Street has been closed.
