Following the decision to anoint Shaquille O’Neal as the cover star of the Legend Edition, 2K has announced today that Cleveland Cavaliers star and shake-n-bake master Kyrie Irving will be front and center on the cover of the standard issue of NBA 2K18.

2K released the potential cover in a tweet on the same day that Irving’s Cavs will face off against the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. It is the first time in NBA history that the same two teams will meet for the third consecutive Finals.

Those who pre-order NBA 2K18 in North America will be given access to the game four days early, starting on September 15. On top of that, pre-order shoppers who pre-order the game for Xbox One, PS4 or Nintendo Switch will receive the following items:

  • 5,000 Virtual Currency
  • 10 MyTeam packs to build your perfect fantasy team, delivered one a week, featuring one random Team 2K Free Agent xard and more!
  • MyPlayer Apparel

Since LeBron James graced the cover as member of the Miami Heat for 2K14, Irving is the first Cleveland Cavalier to ever be honored with a cover spot. Irving was previously featured on the cover of EA’s NBA Live 14.

Irving was selected first overall in the 2011 NBA Draft and named Rookie of the Year that season. He earned NBA All-Star Game MVP honors in 2014 and won his first championship in 2016. The four-time All-Star from Duke averaged a career-high 25.2 points per game during this year’s regular season to go along with 5.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds. Irving earned post-season immortality when he hit what ended up being the game-winning three pointer in Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.

An NBA 2K17 simulation of the series predicted the Warriors would win the series in seven games.

NBA 2K18 launches September 19 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
