What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is an annual federal holiday in the United States that is for honoring those that have died as a result of serving in the military. Those that have passed in combat, as a result of combat, or simply those that have served and have since passed are remembered on this day.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veteran’s Day, a similar holiday in which soldiers are honored. Veteran’s Day takes place every year on November 11th and is for honoring those that have served in the military but have not yet passed on.
Memorial Day has its very own special customs. American flags fly at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day and then they are raised to the top of the staff until sunset. The World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” by John McCrea, inspired the Memorial Day custom of wearing red poppies, which became the official symbol of remembrance.
The federal holiday is observed every year on the last Monday of May, making it Memorial Day Weekend. For 2017, Memorial Day falls on May 29th. Summer doesn’t technically begin until June 21, but many consider Memorial Day Weekend to be the unofficial start of the summer season. Before you hit the beach and heat up the grill, take a moment to pause and remember.
