The 101st Indianapolis 500 was host to a spontaneous two car collision. Just before Turn 2, Jay Howard’s car bounced off the wall and veered diagonally into oncoming traffic. Howard drove right into pole-sitter Scott Dixon’s lane and all hell broke loose.

Dixon’s car got an absolute thrashing, as it smacked against the wall and flipped to the concert as a heap of metal and fire. The car event went airborne, soaring over three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, before crashing hard several times.

Let’s just say that Dixon’s wrecked car will never be driving again.

After the crash, both Howard and Dixon exited their cars. Dixon bent over for a moment. He was then was helped up into an ambulance. You should see this wicked crash for yourself:

Who is Scott Dixon?

New Zealand native Scott Dixon won the Indy 500 back in 2008. He’s also a four-time IndyCar Champion. Last week, Dixon nearly broke barriers when he won the pole, earning himself the fastest average speed in 21 years.

But is Dixon alright from that horrible crash? He was checked, cleared and released from an infield care center.

“I’m glad everybody’s OK. It was a wild ride for sure,” Dixon said. “It’s tough. I think when we make those decisions of which way to go you’re hoping that the car (Howard) is going to stay against the wall. It started to turn down, but I’d already picked that way to go. There’s nowhere else to try to avoid them.”

What happened next?

A red flag was issued at 1:09 P.M. , which allowed a 21 minute delay for the catch-fence to be repaired between Turns 1 and 2. During this time, teams were not allowed to work on their vehicles. A hole had formed in the catch-fence as a result of debris.
