The Ottawa Senators took care of business in Game 1, protecting their home ice with a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers. It was a hard-fought, defensive slugfest, and we should see plenty more of this style of hockey in the best-of-seven series.
In the regular season, Ottawa was 10th in the NHL in fewest goals allowed (2.56 per game) and New York was tied for 12th (2.63 per game). And in the postseason, they’ve both been even stingier, as the Senators have held teams to 2.00 goals per game and the Rangers to only 1.86 goals per game.
In Game 1, both teams got on the board with power play goals in the second period. Ryan McDonagh lit the lamp for the Rangers with roughly 13 minutes left in the period, and Ryan Dzingel tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 18:39 mark.
With the score still at 1-1 late in the third period, defenseman Erik Karlsson delivered a huge goal for Ottawa. The two-time Norris Trophy winner scored from a crazy angle with roughly four minutes left in the game to give the Senators a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
