J. Cole is back for his second HBO documentary, as 4 Your Eyez Only will make its premiere tonight. The documentary shares the name of J. Cole’s most recent studio album, which was both a critical and commercial smash. 4 Your Eyez Only will feature performances of songs from the album, along with interviews conducted by Cole himself. Here’s HBO with more of what to expect in the documentary.
J. Cole: 4 Your Eyez Only, A Dreamville Film, showcases songs from his fourth album, as well as revealing footage containing the heartfelt confessions, concerns and struggles of people in the South. Traveling through different cities gathering interviews, Cole reveals the challenges lower-income residents face trying to obtain viable housing, as well as the frustration for felons of being barred from voting.
Providing a platform for subjects who feel their stories have not been heard, Cole captures these stories in Baton Rouge, Atlanta, Ferguson, Mo., Cole’s hometown of Fayetteville, NC and his father’s hometown of Jonesboro, Ark., where he focuses on how this small town so closely resembles the rest of the country in its struggles with integration.
I don’t know if there is a rapper today who is more of a man of the people than Cole. He’s a true ambassador for hip-hop, and you better believe I’ll be catching one of his shows on his upcoming world tour.
