It’s definitely not the Elite Eight matchup that everyone was expecting, but we’ve got a doozy on tap for this afternoon. In the East Regional final, the (4) Florida Gators will take on the (7) South Carolina Gamecocks for a trip to the Final Four. South Carolina has never made it to a Final Four, while Florida has been there five times with their most recent appearance coming in 2014.
Prior to this year, the Gamecocks hadn’t even played in the NCAA Tournament since 2004. Frank Martin’s bunch is clearly making up for lost time, going on a Cinderalla run that came out of nowhere. South Carolina has beaten (10) Marquette 93-73, (2) Duke 88-81, and (3) Baylor 70-50 en route to their first ever Elite Eight appearance.
After center John Egbunu tore his ACL, no one was giving the Gators much of a chance to make noise in March Madness. Obviously, this was a grave mistake, as Florida has been rolling. The Gators have defeated (13) East Tennessee State 80-65, (5) Virginia 65-39, and (8) Wisconsin 84-83 in an overtime thriller for the ages. Watch Chris Chiozza’s absurd, buzzer-beating three-pointer in the video below.
