The championship game for the 2017 World Baseball Classic is set, as the USA will take on Puerto Rico tonight at Dodger Stadium. Puerto Rico previously made it to the championship in 2013, bringing home a silver medal after losing to the Dominican Republic 3-0. The USA has never been to the final or won a medal at the WBC, and there’s no better way to get on the board than with gold.
To advance past the semifinals, both Puerto Rico and the USA pulled out dramatic, one-run victories. On Monday night, Puerto Rico defeated the Netherlands in thrilling fashion, winning 4-3 in 11 innings after a walk-off sacrifice fly from Eddie Rosario.

And on Tuesday night, the USA beat Japan 2-1 after Adam Jones came through with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 1-1 tie.

This will be the second meeting between the USA and Puerto Rico at the 2017 WBC, and the USA will look to avenge that Pool F loss. Puerto Rico jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and went on to win 6-5, as the USA’s comeback attempt fell just short.
In tonight’s pitching matchup, Marcus Stroman (RHP) will take the ball for the USA and Seth Lugo (RHP) for Puerto Rico. This is the same duel that took place in the previous contest between the USA and Puerto Rico, and neither pitcher fared particularly well the first time around.
Stroman was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings. Lugo picked up the win, but he wasn’t overly sharp, surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.2 innings.
