13-Year-Old Charged With Murder After He Killed His Grandfather Over Doing The Dishes

A 13-year-old Ohio boy has been charged with murdering his 80-year-old grandfather after he “used the elderly man’s head like a battering ram” when he “plowed it through a wall in their home,” prosecutors allege.
The boy, who has not been identified due to his age, is accused of killing Fowler Agenbroad in their Cincinnati, Ohio home in August of 2016.
The teen told police that the pair were arguing about doing the dishes but claims his grandfather’s death was an accident.
Via The Cincinnati Enquirer:

On August 5, 2016, paramedics were called to the St. Claire Avenue house and found Agenbroad unconscious on the floor. He had a broken neck, according to court documents. He died the next day.
The boy struck Agenbroad with “a piece of metal,” and Agenbroad hit the boy with a cane, the documents say. Police investigated, but no charges were filed.
The next day, Agenbroad agreed to allow the boy to return to his Mount Healthy home. Agenbroad had cared for him since he was an infant because the boy’s mother and father struggled with drug abuse. Both eventually died from overdoses.

While the investigation has been going on for seven months, the boy was not charged until March 13. He was charged in Hamilton County Juvenile Court with murder and reckless homicide.
“It’s never easy to deal with any homicide,” Sgt. Nick Michael of Mount Healthy police said. “When there is a young child like this involved, it makes it even harder for us, but we have to stay focused and make our decisions based on facts.”

What Happened?

According to the documents:

  • The boy said when Agenbroad walked away, he “tripped on a rug, falling into (a) wall and to the ground.”
  • The boy said cuts on his hand were from punching a window – he’d become angry about how long it took for paramedics to arrive.
  • The day of the incident, he was taken the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center psychiatric unit. He was discharged four days later to the custody of Hamilton County Job and Family Services.
  • The agency placed him at a youth home for kids with emotional, behavioral, and other mental issues.
