A car bomb exploded at a checkpoint less than a kilometer away from the presidential compound in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, police said.

Police have confirmed that a car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near the presidential compound in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Tuesday.
“A suicide car bomb rammed into a checkpoint near the national theater. It is too early to know details and casualties,” Ahmed Hussein, a police officer, said. However, the AFP is reporting that at least five were killed by the blast.

The National Theater is around 300 meters away from the fortified compound known as Villa Somalia, which also houses other government agencies.
It is unknown at this time who is responsible for the explosion. Previous attacks in the capital have been attributed to al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab. The group strives to oust peacekeepers from the area and topple Somalia’s western-backed government and impose a strict vision of Islam on the state.
