St. Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick, is a cultural and religious holiday held on March 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick who was the foremost patron saint of Ireland. It was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is typically observed by the Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, Eastern Orthodox Church and the Lutheran Church. But what is it all about?
The day is meant to commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland as well as traditional Irish heritage and culture. These celebrations usually involve public parades and festive parties, ceilithe, and the wearing of green clothes and shamrocks. There are also church services to attend.
