Wisconsin is looking to derail the impressively clutch Virgina Tech Hokies as March Madness begins with a bang. The Hokies are looking to make some noise, as this will be their first time back in the tournament since 2007. Virginia Tech is led by junior Zach LeDay who is currently averaging 16.3 points per game. Seth Allen as also made his presence felt with an average around 13.3 points per game.
Both players had to really step up since the Hokies suffered their biggest injury of the season when Chris Clarke tore his ACL in February. The main question for VT is whether they can get enough out of their top seven players. Sure, Justin Bibbs and Justin Robinson will be dangerous from beyond the arc, but they need to stay hot in order for the Hokies to pull off the upset. Virginia has beaten some impressive teams in Duke, Miami, and Virginia so this could be their night to shine.
Wisconsin has been dominant in the paint. Their star player Ethan Happ averages around 13.9 points and 9.1 rebound per game. The Badgers have the seventh-ranked defense in the country and a terrific big man in senior, Nigel Hayes. Bronson Koenig should look to stay hot as he continues to be a deadly shooter this season.
The Badgers have fantastic depth and a 25-9 record. The main knock on Wisconsin is that they have only beaten Marquette and Syracuse which, at the end of the day, is just not that impressive. The winner of the matchup will take on the winner of the Villanova/St. Mary’s clash.
