So, this one came out of nowhere.
A couple weeks ago, Netflix quietly dropped a trailer for a new original called Burning Sands. My memory is far from perfect, but I don’t remember reading or hearing about it anywhere at the time.
However, with the movie dropping tomorrow and a strong critical reception (83%) on Rotten Tomatoes, I decided to give the trailer a look.
I’ve found that Hollywood tends to overdramatize hazing, but this one looks pretty on point. Most fraternities walk a fine line between character-building hazing and legit assault, and that’s the angle Burning Sands seems to be taking.

Burning Sands, directed by Gerard McMurray, from a screenplay by McMurray and Christine Berg, stars Trevor Jackson, Alfre Woodard, Steve Harris, Tosin Cole, DeRon Horton, and Trevante Rhodes. Its world premiere was at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2017, and it will be released on Netflix on March 10, 2017.
