A Middlebury College Professor was injured by protesters Thursday evening while escorting a polarizing speaker on campus, according to the Addison County Independent. Allison Stranger was walking with controversial political scientist Charles Murray on campus as he was headed to speak with a student group. Murray has drawn criticism for his comments on race and intelligence, but was invited to speak on campus.
Protesters shouted as he was greeted outside McCullough Student Center and those inside Wilson Hall turned their back to him when he began to speak. College officials led him to another location after the event when they were “physically and violently confronted by a group of protesters,” according to Bill Burger, the college’s vice president for communications and marketing. Public safety officers were able to usher Stranger and Murray into an administrators car, but the commotion didn’t stop then.
“The protestors then violently set upon the car, rocking it, pounding on it, jumping on and try to prevent it from leaving campus,” he said. “At one point a large traffic sign was thrown in front of the car. Public Safety officers were able, finally, to clear the way to allow the vehicle to leave campus.”
“During this confrontation outside McCullough, one of the demonstrators pulled Prof. Stanger’s hair and twisted her neck,” Burger continued. “She was attended to at Porter Hospital later and (on Friday) is wearing a neck brace.”
Murray was uninjured in the incident.
