The handwritten letters President George W. Bush wrote to Barack Obama and that President Bill Clinton wrote to Bush before have both been released for the very first time. The letters, which were shared by the National Archives and Records Administration, are part of the tradition followed by outgoing presidents as the new commander in chief transitions into office.
Bush tells President Obama, “Congratulations on becoming our President. You have just begun a fantastic chapter in your life.”
Bush told Obama about the challenges and trying moments he will face in the Oval Office before wrapping up the heartfelt message with an inspirational tone.
“No matter what comes, you will be inspired by the character and compassion of the people you now lead.”
The National Archives and Records Administration also released the letter that Bill Clinton left George Bush in 2001.
Back in 2001, former President Clinton wrote to George W. Bush congratulating him on his position, which is the “greatest honor that can come to an American citizen.” Clinton reminds Bush, ‘The burdens you now shoulder are great but often exaggerated. The sheer joy of doing what you believe is right is inexpressible.”
