Multiplayer Games 2017: Top 5 Must-Play Multiplayer Games

People are social creatures. We crave the comradery of others and want to share our experiences with our friends (and sometimes our enemies). Whether it is a standalone multiplayer game or a single player title that includes some aspect of multiplayer functionality, gamers want to explore with or compete against other people online. After all, nobody buys Call of Duty for its six-hour single-player campaign. 2016 was one of the best years in recent memory for multiplayer titles and 2017 is shaping up to be no different.
Which titles will be the true gems once they are released? No one knows. However, we have compiled a list of our choices for the most exciting and most anticipated multiplayer titles coming out in 2017. Here is our list of the top five most anticipated multiplayer games of 2017:

Red Dead Redemption 2

Publisher: Rockstar Studios
Developer: Rockstar Studios
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC (unconfirmed)
Release Date: Q3/Q4 2017

The first Red Dead Redemption was a masterpiece. Beautiful vistas, intense gunfights, and a killer story made it an instant classic and the sole reason why I bought an Xbox 360. The original Red Dead eventually added some post-launch multiplayer options, but they were admittedly lackluster. Years later, with the success of GTA Online, it seems Rockstar has finally figured out how to make a truly memorable multiplayer experience. If Red Dead Redemption 2 allows players to kill, steal, and ride horses together in the same persistent Wild West world, we’re all in for a rootin’ tootin’ good time in 2017.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Paris
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release Date: March 7, 2017

The Ghost Recon franchise has revamped itself yet again and this time the series is taking its version of warfare to the online, open-world arena with Wildlands. In the newest entry of the Tom Clancy franchise, players will be transported to Bolivia in an attempt to take on the biggest cocaine producer in the world. Sounds cliche, but this time around you will have a massive sandbox-style world to blow stuff up, skydive into, and create all-around destruction in. Add in co-op multiplayer and you will have the option to reign down sweet drug-war style justice with up to three friends. Wildlands will let players take missions as they see fit and, when not completing objectives, there will be plenty of side quests and other explosive activities to enjoy. Still not convinced? Check out my article on how to sign up for the beta and maybe you can try it out before it releases in March.

Destiny 2

Publisher: Activision
Developer: Bungie
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release Date: TBA
Tactical Halo-style shoot ’em up, wizardly powers, space opera overtones… ’nuff said, right? Since Bungie has confirmed that it intends to release Destiny 2 this year, it is time to get excited despite the lack of a proper release date or many other details. While vanilla Destiny left something to be desired, with the positive reception of the most recent expansions, it seems Bungie is finally finding their stride when it comes to giving players what they want. The sequel also promises that players’ character progression will carry over into the new game, as well. No one can deny the massive popularity of Destiny and, if they can continue to improve on that addictive experience, Destiny 2 will surely be a “game of the year” contender.

For Honor

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release Date: February 14, 2017

You stand at the precipice of a castle tower, looking down on the battlements below. Hordes of enemy soldiers storm the gates in an attempt to capture or kill all who reside within. You and your team are all that stands between life or death. This is the tableau that is set by For Honor. Players will take control of a hero from one of the three factions (Samurai, Knights, or Vikings) and battle their way through hordes of computer controlled NPCs and player controlled heroes alike. The title features a revolutionary “Art of Battle” combat system which initiates when players encounter stronger enemies. Once in this dueling mode, players can manually position their weapons to strike or block based on visual cues from their opponent. It will be exciting to see if the combat is genuinely as deep and amazing as it sounds. You can sign up for a chance to play in the beta next week and see if For Honor is everything it’s cracked up to be before its release in February.

Crackdown 3

Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Reagent Games
Platforms: PC, Xbox One
Release Date: Q4 2017

We haven’t heard anything about Crackdown 3 in a while and its Q4 release date has me a bit worried about whether or not it will make a 2017 launch at all. However, given the countless hours I have pumped into the original two installments in the series, I would be remiss not to mention my anticipation here. Expect the same open-world super-policing from the original, but this time, Reagent Games is bringing on the mayhem with fully destructible environments. As long as the third game in the series has the same addictive leveling and gives me the ability to jump insane distances from rooftop to rooftop, I’ll be happy.
