Los Angeles residents were forced to do a double take this morning when looking up at the famous “HOLLYWOOD” sign. In an apparent New Year’s Eve prank, one brave vandal somehow pulled off a prank to change the sign to read “HOLLYWeeD”.
The prank appears to be inspired by the recent passing of Proposition 64 in California, which is set to fully legalize recreational marijuana in the state.
According to the Los Angeles Times:
Security footage recorded at 3 a.m. Sunday showed a “lone individual” climbing up the mountain, scaling the sign’s ladders and hanging tarpaulins over the O’s to change them to E’s, said Sgt. Guy Juneau of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Security Services division.
Apparently this isn’t the first time this exact prank was pulled. In 1976 a Cal State Northridge student did the same thing, also on New Year’s Day.
The sign has since been changed back to its original form, but we can all agree that it’s great so see 2017 start on such a high note.
