George Ciccariello-Maher, an associate professor of politics and global studies at Drexel University has a pretty simple Christmas wish list. Unlike some other professors, who might ask for crazy things like their students to be on time or maybe appreciate the dedication these professors have towards education, George Ciccariello wants one thing and one thing only: white genocide.
In a tweet that he sent on Christmas Eve, Professor Ciccariello tweeted “All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide.” He has since made his Twitter account private, but you can see a screenshot of the tweet below.
As if that wasn’t controversial enough for George, he then followed up his tweet on Christmas by saying that “To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed.” Apparently, that “clarification” didn’t make anything clearer to Drexel University, except that he needed to schedule a sit-down meeting with the school’s president as soon as possible.
Here’s the official statement from the school, which was made on Christmas Day… Something I’m sure was not an issue whatsoever.
“While the University recognizes the right of its faculty to freely express their thoughts and opinions in public debate, Professor Ciccariello-Maher’s comments are utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the University.” The university also said it “contacted Ciccariello-Maher today to arrange a meeting to discuss this matter in detail.”
For his part, Ciccariello has received a large amount of backlash from the tweet. His explanation, which was given to The Philadelphia Inquirer by email, was that the idea of white genocide is something that’s been made up by the Alt-Right.
“On Christmas Eve, I sent a satirical tweet about an imaginary concept, ‘white genocide.’ For those who haven’t bothered to do their research, ‘white genocide’ is an idea invented by white supremacists and used to denounce everything from interracial relationships to multicultural policies (and most recently, against a tweet by State Farm Insurance). It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I’m glad to have mocked it.”
Professor Ciccariello-Maher will probably have a meeting with the school today.
