The game we’ve been waiting on for months is finally here: Michigan vs. Ohio State. Besides having yearlong bragging rights, there is a lot at stake in this game for both of these teams, most importantly being a likely birth in the College Football Playoff.
After squeaking by with a one point victory against Michigan State last weekend, the Ohio State Buckeyes are coming into this game ranked as the number two team in the country with a 10-1 record. A win will all but secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, but not in the Big Ten Championship game because their only loss on the season came from Penn State, who would get in over them if they beat Michigan State on Saturday. Although they haven’t played their best as of late, the Buckeyes have been a force on both offense and defense all season, ranking in the top five in total defense and top 25 in total offense. Ohio State is coming into this game as 6.5 point favorites, and it makes sense because they’re playing at home and have players leftover from their National Championship team of two years ago. Not to mention head coach Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about winning big games.
On the other side of the field are the number three ranked Michigan Wolverines, who are also heading into Saturday with a 10-1 record. The Wolverines were dominating teams for the first half of their season, but over the last two weeks they have lost to Iowa and played a sloppy game against Indiana in a winning effort. Although they have the best defense in the country, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Jabrill Peppers, they may be without starting quarterback Wilton Speight who is nursing a shoulder injury. If Speight can go, I give Michigan a good chance at winning the game and locking up a spot in the Big Ten Championship game, but if not, it could get ugly early. We should be in store for a great game.
