Halt and Catch Fire is the best TV show you aren’t watching. An American period drama television series created by Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, Halt and Catch Fire premiered on AMC on June 1, 2014. The series is set in the Silicon Prairie of Texas, starting in 1983, and depicts a fictionalized insider’s view of the personal computer revolution. The show’s title refers to computer machine code instruction HCF, the execution of which would cause the computer’s central processing unit to stop working (“catch fire” was a humorous exaggeration).
In August 2014, AMC renewed Halt and Catch Fire for a second season, which premiered on May 31, 2015 and concluded on August 2, 2015. In October 2015, AMC renewed the series for a 10-episode third season, with the first episode airing on August 21, 2016, ahead of the two-hour season premiere on August 23, 2016.
Halt And Catch Fire takes place in the early 1980s, when the spirit of innovation in personal computing is about to catch fire. Hot on the trail is a renegade trio — a visionary, an engineer and a prodigy — who risk everything to realize their vision of building a computer that can change the future. Not long after IBM corners the market with its flagship PC, a flaw is discovered in its operation, opening the door for competition. In steps Joe MacMillan, a former IBM executive who now works for Cardiff Electric. MacMillan plans to reverse-engineer IBM’s technology, putting Cardiff in the thick of the personal computer race. He enlists the help of engineer Gordon Clark, who dreams of creating a revolutionary computer, and Cameron Howe, a volatile prodigy who puts her future on the line to join MacMillan’s rogue project.
