The ESPY awards are like the sports version of the Golden Globes. While it’s technically an awards show, it’s main purpose is to bring the professional athlete community together.
ESPY, which stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award, is an award show hosted by ABC to recognize individual and team athletic achievement. The first ESPY Awards were held in 1993. As the similarly styled Grammy, Emmy, Academy Award, and Tony Awards, the ESPYs are hosted by a celebrity. However, the style of the ESPYs are more relaxed, light, and self-referential than that of many other awards shows, with comedic sketches usually included. So like I said, it’s essentially the athletic Golden Globes.
From their inception to 2004, ESPY Award winners were chosen only through voting by fans. Since 2004, sportswriters, broadcasters, sports executives, and sportspersons, and ESPN personalities also vote. Award winners have been selected thereafter exclusively through online fan balloting conducted from amongst candidates selected by the ESPY Select Nominating Committee.
This year’s ESPY Awards are tonight, July 13, at 8 PM EST on ABC, and are being hosted by WWE Superstar John Cena.
