Popstar kind of fizzled out this summer as yet another box-office bomb for Andy Samberg and his pals in The Lonely Island — but one fan has taken the time to post the best song from the boy-band mockumentary.
In the movie, “Equal Rights” is part of fading pop star Conner4Real’s attempt to seem relevant by celebrating equal rights. You get the joke pretty quickly. “Discrimination,” intones Conner. “That ain’t right” — before rapping passionately about gay rights while making sure that everybody knows that he’s not gay.
P!nk shows up to help, and it’s the best song she’s been part of in years. She even sounds like she could’ve gone into the studio without knowing what Conner was up to — which is exactly how this would work out in real life. Sadly, Popstar didn’t work as a comedy in real life. We’re thinking that Andy Samberg would rather us just forget the whole thing, and this is probably one totally unauthorized leak.
Consider, for example, how quickly the Conner4Real Twitter account gave up on pushing the movie. Judging from this video, the movie was still given a chance to make some money somewhere in Asia. Don’t forget we got the uncensored (and very NSFW) ‘Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song),” too — which is also better than anything in the actual Popstar production…
