Following Brexit 2016 and the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced his intent to follow through with his promise to resign from office. It’s a decision that Cameron made when the referendum was first announced. So now the vote is in, the biggest question that everyone is asking is who will replace David Cameron as Prime Minister?
That’s a question that bookies, actual gambling institutions, across the country have started to put money on. Companies like William Hill and Ladbrokes (the two companies who incorrectly believed voters would choose to Remain) are offering real odds on who they believe will replace Cameron at 10 Downing Street. And if you’re a Brit with money to burn, it’s something you can actually put money on.
Why Is Cameron Leaving?
David Cameron is resigning from the office of Prime Minister because of a promise he made when the referendum was announced. Cameron believed that if British voters wanted to leave the European Union that he would no longer be the right man for the job. In this morning’s press conference, ten minutes after the final vote was announced, Cameron had this to say:
“I was absolutely clear about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the European Union, and I made clear the referendum was about this and this alone — not the future of any single politician, including myself.
But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path, and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.
I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months, but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.”
So with that, Cameron announced that he will leave office in October 2016. Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench 1922 committee (a really British sounding entity), will be responsible for running the competition. Those who wish to be eligible for election must submit their names to Mr. Brady.
Who Will Replace Cameron?
Borish Johnson (1/1 William Hill – 1/1/ Ladbrokes)
A lot of the media suggests that former London Mayor Boris Johnson, the leader of the “Leave” party, will be the favorite to take Cameron’s place. He has a lot of support within the Tory party, is a public figure used to the attention, and will be seen as a strong leader following the Leave’s victory.
