According to a new report from the Orlando Sentinel citing at least four Pulse Nightclub regular customers, gunman Omar Mateen had been to the Orlando LGBT nightclub at least a dozen times before his deadly terrorist attack there which left 49 dead. Frequent Pulse patron Ty Smith told the Orlando newspaper, “Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent.”
“We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times,” Ty Smith said. “He told us he had a wife and child.”
A Los Angeles Times report today quotes Pulse regular Kevin West as having said that Sateen had been messaging him for a year on and off prior to the mass murder using the gay chat and dating app Jack’d.
This is an unexpected new wrinkle and while I’m not going to speculate on this deranged man’s motives, it is clear that he was seriously mentally disturbed. Mateen pledged his allegiance to ISIS in a 911 call just prior to the killing spree.
