Despite your best efforts in the two Plants vs. Zombies mobile games and its 3D evolution, Garden Warfare, you’ve failed to protect your garden from the zombies, and they now rule the roost. In Garden Warfare 2, you take the plants on attack in the realm of Zomburbia.
Game: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
Consoles: Xbox One (reviewed), PS4, PC
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developers: PopCap Games
Release Date: February 23
More accessible and inventive than the first game, the change in settings gives the game more of the flavor of a traditional shooter than the tower defense-minded original. Loading up your plants with power-ups and special attacks, then stalking and killing your undead enemies in ultra-creepy environments, is more thrilling than the standard defend-the-lawn setup.
Co-op takes the lead over competitive action this time out. The ability to team up with as many as three other players to assault enemy bases gives Garden Warfare 2 the appeal of a MOBA like League of Legends. There is also standard competitive multiplayer that lets you slug it out with friends and strangers. The choices of characters and loadouts are vastly expanded, making the first game seem weak and inconsequential by comparison.
As with the first game, you’re not locked in to the plant side of the conflict. You can also choose the side of the zombies and unleash holy hell on your vegetation-spawned enemies while defending your base.
Like the first game, the sequel is weighed down with tons of mobile game-style microtransactions meant to keep pumping money out of your credit card for months. But there’s nothing you can buy that you also can’t earn with some old-fashioned grinding, and that’s the best way to experience all Garden Warfare 2 has to offer. The expanded multiplayer features, as well as the ability to bring back items and characters you earned/bought in the first game, keep the sequel from feeling like a scam.
While some may complain that Garden Warfare 2 isn’t enough of a new experience to be a full sequel, and is really just an expansion that finally firms up the game as the full experience the original is meant to be, that’s no reason to steer clear of the game. If you enjoyed the original at all, you’ll dig everything the follow-up has to offer. If the first game let you down, this is the one that will satisfy your demands.
