The Academy Awards—commonly referred to as the “Oscars”—is a ceremony presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) meant to honor the best films and performances of the past year.
Nominations were announced on January 14, 2016. The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, received the most nominations for Best Picture with a total of twelve. The post-apocalyptic thriller Mad Max: Fury Road came in second with ten. Also up for Best Picture is The Big Short, Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, The Martian, Room, and Spotlight.
DiCaprio is a favorite for Best Actor, making many wonder whether this will be the year he finally gets an Oscar. The 41-year-old has been nominated four times before for his roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and The Wolf of Wall Street. DiCaprio will be competing with Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, and Michael Fassbender.
The hopefuls for Best Actress are Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlotte Rampling, and Saoirse Ronan.
