There are 40 bowl games this season. That means 80 teams had to make the postseason. Unfortunately this year, there weren’t enough teams that finished 6-6 or better to fill out all the slots so some teams that were 5-7 into the postseason party. One of those teams, the San Jose State Spartans, will play in the Cure Bowl against the 6-6 Georgia State Panthers at the Florida Citrus Bowl. This may not be a game circled on college football fan calendars but it is still worth tuning in for.
San Jose State lost three of their last four including a 40-23 loss to Boise State to end the regular season. Kenny Potter has thrown for 1,895 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions this season for the Spartans while finding Billy Freeman quite a bit in the process. Freeman has 47 catches for 581 yards and six touchdowns. The ground game is where the Spartans have shined with Tyler Ervin and his 1,469 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. It is a game of very contrasting styles.
Georgia State has won their last four games with a 34-7 win at Georgia Southern capping the streak. Like San Jose State running, the Panthers’ passing game is their bread and butter. Nick Arbuckle has passed for 4,160 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and has a 1,000-yard receiver in Penny Hart. Hart has 71 catches for 1,095 yards and eight touchdowns on the year. Glenn Smith has led Georgia State is rushing with 334 yards and a touchdown for the year. The two teams both average around 28 points offensively and defensively. It should be a very tight game.
