Jabari R. Dean, a University of Illinois-Chicago student, was arrested on Monday following an investigation into threats made against the University of Chicago (two different schools). That threat led to the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus being closed all day. Jabari Dean is an Electrical Engineering major.
Here’s a courtroom sketch of Jabari that was taken Monday afternoon.
Here’s another photo of Jabari (C) leaving the courtroom with his lawyer (L).
Police believe that Jabari, a UIC student living off-campus, was the person responsible for making the threat which was actually found on WorldStarHipHop. He posted the threat under a clip from the movie Panther.
Here’s the comment that Jabari wrote:
This is my only warning. At 10AM Monday morning, I’m going to the campus quad of the University of Chicago. I will be armed with an M-4 carbine and two desert eagles, all fully loaded. I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time McDonald was killed.
I will then die killing any number of white policeman in the process. This is not a joke. I am to do my part and rid the world of white devils. I expect you do the same.
Jabari Dean is now in federal custody.
After the arrest, Robert Zimmer, the president of the University of Chicago wrote to the students and faculty:
From: Robert J. Zimmer, PresidentTo: University of Chicago Campus CommunitySubject: Update on Campus ThreatThe University of Chicago has received confirmation from the FBI that an individual is in custody in connection with yesterday’s threat against the University.Classes and events remain canceled for today. The security precautions we announced last evening remain in effect for the remainder of the day. We understand that law enforcement officials will provide more information on the investigation later this afternoon. Once we have this additional information, I will write again with more details, including our plans for tomorrow.
Jabari Dean was a student at the University of Illinois-Chicago. It says on his LinkedIn page that he was previously a student at Chicago State University. According to a press release from the justice department, Dean is being charged with “transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.” That could carry the weight of up to five years of time in prison.
He will remain in jail until December 1st when his bail situation will be sorted out.
