The Notre Dame Fighting Irish knew that they would have to win out to have any chance at the college football playoff. The Irish hosted the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday at home in South Bend and behind a huge day from Josh Adams in the run game, Notre Dame improved to 9-1 for the season with a 28-7 win. Wake Forest fell to 3-7 with the loss but the Fighting Irish are well on their way to moving up the playoff rankings if they can keep on winning.
DeShone Kizer had a game-management kind of day, going just 13-for-19 passing for 111 yards but did rush for a 12-yard score late in the first quarter to open the scoring. Under a minute later, Notre Dame would score again when Andrew Trumbetti intercepted John Wolford’s pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown and it was 14-0. In the second quarter after Wake pinned the Irish back to their own 1-yard line, Adams went off on a 98-yard touchdown run to electrify the capacity crowd. He would finish with 141 yards on 17 carries.
Wolford would rush in for a one-yard score of his own for the lone Wake Forest score before Kizer had his second rushing touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Wolford would finish 19-for-30 passing for 219 yards and the critical interception. Notre Dame will host Boston College next week under the lights while Wake Forest will have the pleasure of going to No. 1-ranked Clemson. Clemson is the only team to beat Notre Dame this season.
