On paper, it would have appeared that the Florida State Seminoles would have an easy time with the NC State Wolfpack. However, the Wolfpack showed that they were a force to be reckoned with as they jumped all over the Seminoles early as Everett Golson kept turning the ball over. Sean Maguire took over and Florida State took off, scoring 17 straight points to pull away for a 27-17 that moved Florida State to 8-2 for the season and 6-2 in the ACC. NC State drops to 6-4 and 2-4 in conference play.
The Seminoles did take an early lead on a Dalvin Cook 13-yard touchdown run but Jacoby Brissett would throw a two-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Samuels and followed that up by rushing for a two-yard score of his own to give NC State a 17-7 lead after the first 15 minutes of action. Cook scored from 30 yards out with 5:17 to play in the half and after a Roberto Aguayo 40-yard field goal, the game was tied at 17 by the half.
Aguayo gave the Seminoles the lead for good midway through the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal before Maguire found Kermit Whitfield for a 27-yard touchdown score to make it a two-possession game. In the fourth quarter, Maguire found Whitfield again on a 45-yard connection to put the game out of reach. Whitfield had six catches for 117 yards and the two touchdowns. Cook broke the Florida State single-season rush record during the game as he finished with 138 yards on the ground. Maguire went 18-for-28 for 231 yards, two touchdowns and a touchdown. Brissett would end his day 27-for-47 for 209 yards.
Florida State will play a non-conference game against Chattanooga next week while NC State will host Syracuse.
