The Oklahoma Sooners went into Saturday’s road game against the Kansas Jayhawks wanting to make sure that they didn’t overlook Kansas, who was 0-7 for the season coming into the game. Baker Mayfield made sure that didn’t happen with three touchdown passes in the first quarter as the 14th-ranked Sooners pounded Kansas 62-7 to improve to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Mayfield spread the ball out as well with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon followed by an 11-yard pass to Durron Neal and a four-yard pass to his favorite target Sterling Shepard, who finished with 11 catches for 183 yards. Mayfield would finish the day 27-for-32 passing for 383 yards and four touchdowns. Samaje Perine scored twice on the ground during his day of 11 carries for 90 yards. Alex Ross would lead the Sooners with 103 yards rushing.
Ryan Willis wasn’t terrible for Kansas while going 20-for-34 for 181 yards and a touchdown but it was far from enough on this day. Tyler Patrick had five catches for 46 yards and the lone score. Kansas will now travel to Texas next week while Oklahoma will host Iowa State before a big showdown against Baylor the following week.
