ABC7 is reporting that the officer was shot near a cement factory, and there’s no reason to suspect that anyone in the school is in any danger.

1:30 PM EST–Update: This is the story of what happened, via the Chicago Tribune.

The officer was on routine patrol and radioed shortly before 8 a.m. that he was going to check on some suspicious activity, Lake County sheriff’s spokesman Chris Covelli said during a news conference late in the morning. He then radioed that he was in a “foot pursuit” but communication was lost after that, Covelli said. Other units responded and found him shot at Route 12 and Sayton Road, he said.

The officer was found in a marshy area, stripped of his gun and other gear, Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. He died at the scene, the undersheriff said.

Police have established a perimeter and are seeking one black male and two white males, Rose said.

5:00 PM EST–Update: Authorities have named Lt. Joe Gliniewicz as the victim. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Needless to say, police are not messing around. Check out what was spotted as having just joined the hunt.

This just arrived.
